You may be eligible for Home Help if…

  • You have Medicaid — or qualify for it. Not enrolled yet? You can apply at MiBridges or your local MDHHS office.
  • You are 18 or older — the program serves adults; help for minor children is handled separately.
  • You need hands-on help — with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, mobility or meals.
  • A home assessment is completed — an MDHHS adult services worker visits to confirm the need.

Not sure if you qualify? That part is on us.

Eligibility can feel confusing. Tell us a little about your situation and we'll walk you through the Medicaid and Home Help steps — and help you get the state assessment scheduled.

Important: Home Help eligibility is determined by MDHHS through a comprehensive assessment. Rabeya Homecare helps you prepare and apply, but does not decide eligibility.

The path to Home Help, step by step

Here's how the state program works — and where we help at every stage so nothing falls through the cracks.

1

Confirm Medicaid

Contact the Adult Services unit at your local MDHHS office. Not on Medicaid yet? Apply at MiBridges — we can help.

2

In-home assessment

An MDHHS adult services worker visits to complete the comprehensive assessment (MDHHS-5534) and set your approved hours.

3

Choose your caregiver

You are the employer — pick a trusted family member or an agency like Rabeya, and change caregivers anytime.

4

Care begins

Once Medicaid and the assessment are complete and services are authorized, care starts at home.

The application can take up to 45 days. Official program details: Michigan.gov/homehelp · Apply for Medicaid: Michigan.gov/MiBridges

Already caring for a loved one? You may be paid for it.

Home Help is self-directed, so the client chooses who provides their care — and that can be a trusted relative or friend. For many Michigan families, the care they already give can become paid, supported work.

As the client, your loved one is the employer: they can hire, change, or let go of a caregiver at any time. We help with enrollment, the paperwork, and keeping everything compliant.

Ask about becoming a caregiver

A caregiver can be paid if they…

  • Are a relative (other than a spouse), a friend, or someone the client chooses
  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Can follow the client's care plan and program instructions
  • Pass a background check

Who cannot be paid

  • A spouse of the client
  • A parent caring for their own minor child
  • The person receiving Home Help (a caregiver can't also receive services)

Care that feels like family, backed by a program built to keep people home

The Home Help program exists so Michiganders can live safely and independently at home instead of moving to an adult foster home, a home for the aged, or a nursing facility. We built Rabeya Homecare around that same belief.

  • Dignity first

Respectful, patient help with the most personal parts of the day.

  • Family can be paid

The program is self-directed, so a trusted relative can be the caregiver.

  • Paperwork made simple

We help with Medicaid, the application, and preparing for the state visit.

Rabeya walked us through Medicaid and the Home Help assessment step by step. My mom gets help with bathing and meals every day, and I finally sleep at night.

I didn't know I could be paid to care for my husband. They handled the paperwork and the state visit. It changed everything for our family.

Kind, patient, and always on time. My father is stubborn about help, but he actually looks forward to their visits now.

Answers before you ever pick up the phone

What is Michigan's Home Help program?

Home Help is a Michigan Medicaid program run by MDHHS. It pays for non-specialized personal care at home — things like bathing, dressing, meals and mobility — so adults can stay safely in their own home instead of moving to a nursing facility or adult foster care.

How much does it cost?

For clients who meet Medicaid eligibility, there is no out-of-pocket cost for authorized Home Help services. We help you confirm Medicaid status and understand exactly what is covered.

Can a family member be the paid caregiver?

Often, yes. Home Help is self-directed, which means the client chooses their caregiver — and that can be a trusted relative or friend. A caregiver who is being paid cannot also receive Home Help services at the same time.

Who decides if I qualify?

Eligibility is determined by MDHHS. An adult services worker completes a comprehensive in-home assessment to confirm the need and authorize services. Rabeya Homecare helps you prepare and apply, but does not make the eligibility decision.

Is there a waiting list?

No. Home Help is an entitlement for those who meet the requirements, so there is no waiting list once you are approved.

How long does the application take?

The Home Help application process can take up to 45 days. It starts by contacting the Adult Services unit at your local MDHHS office and confirming Medicaid, followed by an in-home assessment. We help keep things moving at each step.

Who can (and cannot) be a paid caregiver?

A paid caregiver can be a relative (other than a spouse), a friend, or someone the client chooses; they must be 18 or older, able to follow the care plan, and pass a background check. A spouse, a parent caring for their own minor child, and the person receiving Home Help cannot be paid.

Who is the employer — me or the state?

The client is the employer in the Home Help program, not the State of Michigan. That means the client chooses their caregiver (an individual or an agency) and can hire, change, or let go of a caregiver at any time.

What does Home Help not cover?

Home Help covers non-specialized personal care. It does not pay for skilled or specialized medical care, home-delivered meals, or services for a caregiver who is also receiving Home Help. Your MDHHS assessment confirms exactly what is authorized.

What if I have both Medicaid and Medicare?

If you qualify for both, Michigan Health Link offers Home Help services along with other long-term care supports. We can help you understand which path fits your situation.

How do I get started?

Call us or send a message through the form on this page. We will talk through your situation, confirm Medicaid, and help get the state assessment scheduled — usually with a response the same day.
